| STEPS TO TEACHING
The course provides a comprehensive curriculum which includes
educational psychology as well as pedagogical factors.
The course work provides knowledge and skills necessary to teach in the
diverse classrooms of today's school. This knowledge and skills are
also intended to prepare the student for successful certification in Texas.
SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH-BASED READING PRACTICES:
This is composed of the five research-based practices that resulted from the
National Reading Panel, the twelve research-based components of a
Reading Program and Put Reading First.
THE FOURTEEN LEARNER-CENTERED PSYCHOLOGICAL PRINCIPLES:
This provides student with background knowledge and "are intended to deal
holistically with learners in the context of real-world learning
situations." This knowledge is expanded to reinforce the
Constructionist view of learning.
SPECIAL POPULATIONS:
Bilingual Education students are provided with knowledge and opportunities
to demonstrate how second language learning occurs. Convergent research from
Virginia Collier and Wayne Thomas is presented to support critical program
issues. Historical, legislative, linguistic and demographic factors
that impact bilingual education are integrated as well. The
development of lesson plans designed for 2nd language instruction is also
included.
EXCEPTIONALITY:
This includes legal and ethical requirements and knowledge regarding IDEA,
FERPA, ADA, 504, and Special Education.
PEDAGOGY:
Students are provided with numerous opportunities to use the Texas Essential
Knowledge and Skills as the curriculum foundation in the development of
lesson plans. Various instructional delivery structures are included
such as whole, group, small group, cooperative learning and other research
based student management practices.
TEACHING IN TEXAS:
Students are provided opportunities to review the various Texas assessment
formats such as L.A.S.; R.P.T.E.; T.A.K.S. and S.D.A.A. Instruction
also includes the analysis and review of an A.E.I.S. report to disaggregate
test data.
INTERNSHIP:
Interns are required to teach as well as conduct observations of model
instructors. A highly experienced supervisor is assigned to provide
corrective and immediate feedback to all interns. Scheduled seminars
will be integrated in an effort to support and enrich their teaching
experience.
